When Does a Tyre NeedReplacing Not Repairing?
Under BS AU 159, a puncture can only be repaired if it sits within the central three-quarters of the tread and the tyre’s internal structure is undamaged. Common situations where replacement is the only safe option:
- Tread depth below 1.6mm the UK legal minimum.
- Sidewall or shoulder damage cuts, bulges, or impact breaks in the sidewall cannot be repaired.
- Tyre blowout a sudden rapid deflation at speed causes irreparable damage to the inner liner and carcass.
- Pothole or kerb impact damage even if the tyre holds air initially, internal damage may cause a bubble.
- Run-flat driven fully deflated the reinforced sidewall deteriorates under load when there’s no air pressure inside.
